The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Thursday night paid a courtesy visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his Kano residence.

During the visit, Senator Kwankwaso introduced the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, to the former president.

Although details of the meeting were not disclosed, political observers have linked it to early consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which Peter Obi is expected to fly the party’s presidential ticket alongside Kwankwaso as his running mate.

In a post on his verified X account, Kwankwaso wrote:

“Last night, I paid a courtesy visit to our esteemed leader, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, at his accommodation in Kano.

“I was accompanied by the former Deputy Governor and our gubernatorial candidate, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.”

The engagement continued on Friday morning as Kwankwaso accompanied Obasanjo to the Emir’s Palace in Kano, where they attended the turbaning ceremony of Barrister Abubakar Mahmoud, a prominent legal practitioner and political associate.

The former president’s presence at the traditional event attracted widespread attention from political stakeholders, traditional leaders, and residents across Kano.

Reacting to the visit, spokesman of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Mohammed, said the meeting should not be viewed as unusual.

According to him, Kwankwaso served as Governor of Kano State during Obasanjo’s administration as President, and both leaders have maintained a long-standing mentor-mentee relationship over the years.

Dr. Mohammed added that courtesy visits among senior political leaders are normal, stressing that the NDC, under the leadership of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and vice presidential candidate, Senator Kwankwaso, remains focused on strengthening its structures nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections.
