Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has called on parents, Islamic scholars, religious leaders and community stakeholders to intensify efforts to tackle youth restiveness, immoral behaviour, substance abuse and other social vices across the state.
Governor Yusuf made the call during overnight visits to eight Maulud processions held across Kano State to commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
The governor expressed concern over the growing involvement of some youths in phone snatching, hooliganism, substance abuse and what he described as the misuse of social media to defame and insult respected individuals.
Governor Yusuf urged parents to strengthen the moral upbringing of their children, while calling on Islamic clerics and other religious leaders to intensify preaching, counselling and prayers aimed at guiding young people towards responsible and productive lives.
“Kano is well known for practising Islamic teachings and for its deep devotion to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). However, it is deeply troubling to see some disgruntled youths using social media platforms to insult people of dignity,” the governor said.
He particularly condemned the alleged use of social media by some youths to abuse Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, community elders and political leaders.
“It is completely unacceptable to see youths abusing Islamic clerics, traditional rulers, respected community elders, and political leaders on social media,” Governor Yusuf added.
The governor stressed that addressing the challenges confronting young people requires collective responsibility, urging parents, religious leaders, traditional institutions and other stakeholders to work with government in promoting discipline, moral values and peaceful coexistence.
He also disclosed that the Kano State Government had established a dedicated Task Force to combat drug abuse, illicit substances and human trafficking, describing the initiative as part of efforts to protect young people from activities capable of undermining their future.
According to him, the administration is also revitalising 26 skill acquisition institutes across the state to provide youths with opportunities to acquire productive skills, become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic development.
Governor Yusuf said the government would continue to support initiatives that promote youth empowerment, moral discipline and social stability, while urging residents to complement government efforts through responsible parenting, religious guidance and community vigilance.
