The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has been accused of gross negligence after a young and promising mother, Amina Muhammad lost her life at the facility on Sunday.
The expectant mother lost her life due to complications from a Caesarean Section (CS) which her family attributed to negligence, unprofessionalism and poorly equiped unit in the facility.
According to information made available to this medium by an elder sister (name withheld), Amina’s CS was unnecessarily delayed initially over provision of blood pints Incase there was need for transfusion but her condition grew worse immediately after the CS and eventually lost her life.
“She checked into the hospital by herself last Friday but was unnecessarily delayed over issues of blood, a hospital like AKTH should have a standard blood bank”.
“After all the rigmarole, she was later operated on without any transfusion but her condition grew worse with breathing difficulty, was placed on oxygen with a manual machine and later connected to an oxygen concentrator with no electricity to power the device”.
“Imagine a hospital like AKTH with no stable alternative source of power supply, we experienced unbearable heat due to harsh weather imagine what the sick are going through”.
“They were inconsistent, unprofessional and showed no empathy or whatsoever, we pleaded for her transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for better attention but they refused instead, she was moved back into the labor room”.
“We are devastated and have informed human right lawyers about this already”, the sister added.
When contacted, the Public Relation Officer of the Hospital, Haj. Hauwa Inuwa Dutse said she has forwarded the deceased file to the management for a review.
” I have personally submitted the late woman’s file records to the management. It is painful to lose a loved one”.
” They will review everything and find out who is at fault or what went wrong and the public will be duly informed about our findings”, she affirmed.
However, hospitals and health workers in Kano have been accused severally of negligence and treating patients and relatives with disdain which sometimes ends with physical brawl.
