Broadcast stations in Kano state have been urged to prevent character defamation and other unethical practices in their stations.
The state’s Honorable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya said the call became pertinent after careful review of how some broadcast stations allow some unscrupulous persons attack individuals during political programs.
He said, stations must adhere to the ethics of the job and the NBC codes and regulations which ensure the safety of individuals’ right to dignity and others.
He said, it is amazing how character defamation and assassinations are allowed to go on air by some stations without weighing it’s repercussions.
Waiya who frowned at the menace called on heads of stations in the state to unite and promote culture of peace and tolerance within the political space which will foster peace and healthy democracy in Kano.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Coordinator of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, Malan Adamu Salihu, reported that 262 broadcast violations were recorded in the state by his office between January and February 2025, with 196 related to political programmes and 150 involving personality attacks.
He therefore reiterated that this statistics highlighted the need for urgent action to promote responsible broadcasting practices in Kano.
