After years of dedicated advocacy leading to enactment of Kano Free Maternal and Child Healthcare law, a new phase of the project has been launched.
The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), said haven achieved the first phase of the mission for Free Maternal and Healthcare Law all focus will now be on promoting the creation of practical action plan to ensure the effective implementation of the law.
The Executive Director, CHRICED, Dr. Ibrahim Zikirullahi stated this on Thursday in Kano during the launching of the project, ‘Promotion of Democratic Participation in Nigeria: Social Accountability in the Implementation of Free Maternal and Child Healthcare Law in Kano State/Nigeria.
According to him, aside ensuring effective implementation of the law, CHRICED will also ensure robust monitoring and evaluation system to assess the progress and impact of the law in Kano State.
He said, this initiative is driven by a critical and urgent objective to significantly reduce the alarming rates of maternal and child mortality in the region adding that such services is a fundamental human right that should be guaranteed to all rather than being treated as a privilege reserved for a selected few.
Zikirullahi further stated that the Centre in the next three years will also engage in activities designed to raise awareness about the FMNCH law, educate the public on their rights on the subject matter and mobilize community members to advocate for the effective delivery of these services.
He strongly called on all key stakeholders involved in the FMNCH framework to join forces with CHRICED in advocating for thorough and effective implementation of the law while applauding their partners, MISEREORE/KZE, Germany for their support.
Julia Kroja, Misereor Kz Germany, Country Director of Nigeria, affirmed that the organisation remains committed to addressing maternal and child mortality and other issues in Africa.
She however applauded CHRICED for its commitment to stopping avoidable death in Kano State, pledging support towards ensuring smooth implementation of the project aimed at saving lives.
