Since his inception into office, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State took decisive moves to fulfil his campaign promises on education, placing the sector at the heart of his administration’s development agenda.
Recall the governor shortly after he assumed office declared a state of emergency on education, vowing to reverse years of decline and restore confidence in public schools across the state.
Blazon News Nigeria tracked some of these moves which are in fulfilment of his campaign promises in the sector thus; the Abba’s administration made a bold financial commitment allocating nearly 30 per cent of the state budget to education — one of the highest allocations in Nigeria — signalling strong political will to invest in the future of Kano’s children.
His government has also since embarked on aggressive renovation and construction of classrooms across the 44 local government areas, addressing the challenge of overcrowded and dilapidated school structures.
Thousands of desks and learning materials have also been supplied to schools, ensuring that pupils no longer sit on bare floors while receiving lessons.
To strengthen the teaching workforce, the administration approved the recruitment of thousands of qualified teachers to bridge manpower gaps in primary and secondary schools.
In addition, over 16,000 teaching and non-teaching staff have benefited from promotions and improved welfare packages, boosting morale across the sector.
In fulfilling his pledge to make education more affordable, Governor Yusuf reduced tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions by 50 per cent, easing the burden on parents and students.
The government also settled outstanding examination fees and provided free JAMB forms to thousands of Kano indigenes, expanding access to higher education opportunities.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has no doubt, demonstrated clear alignment between his campaign promises and governance. His administration continues to prioritize quality, access and infrastructure in rebuilding Kano’s education system which has earned him prominent awards and recognitions.
