Journalists hail EU over interventions in Nigeria

Journalists in Northwest Nigeria have applauded the European Union (EU) for it’s sustained support to Democracy and media in Nigeria.

The journalists drawn from Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Jigawa made the commendation shortly after an interface with selected online journalists from the region which held in Kano organized by the International Press Centre, IPC.

The interface according to the Executive Director of the Centre, Mr. Lanre Arogudande, the interface is part of initiatives under Component 4b: Support to Media of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria.

He said, the Phase 11 programme which IPC and CEMESO are implementing aimed at strengthening media professionalism in the coverage of elections and the interface tends to examine the newsroom enabling environment and measures for improvement in order for the media to engage in impactful reporting of the 2027 elections.

The participants, commended EU for it’s supports in the country at a time other international partners have pulled out of the country.

“The European Union have continued to support democracy growth and media in Nigeria despite the chunk of other commitments before it”.

“It is on records that many international partners have left the country and are no longer carrying out projects but the EU stayed back, this is highly appreciated and we commend them”, the participants stated.

During the session, the participants from various mediums pledged to stepdown knowledge acquired and also engage in reportage geared towards the growth of democracy, good governance, amplifying the masses’ voices, advocating for more slots for women in politics, People with Special Needs, accountability and many more.
