A recent survey has shown the Facebook platform as the most used social media platform to attack Women and girls in Nigeria.
According to the Project Officer, Blessing Oladujonye, the platform during the survey recorded 49 cases of different sorts of attacks on women representing 74.2 percent in the findings.
She made the disclosure Thursday during a presentation and stakeholders discourse on Trends and Contexts of Misogyny and TFGBV in Nigeria under the #EndmisogynyNG Advocacy Campaign by JFC.
Statistics from other social media platforms shows; 8 cases on X (Twitter) representing 12.1%, 8 cases also on Instagram (12.1%) while 1 case was recorded on TikTok platform (1.5%).
According to the data, 28.8 percent of violence or hatred against women on social media platforms are carried out by male folks and interestingly, 25.8 percent of those behind such attacks are women who are also misogyny by nature.
She However lamented that 3 social media influencers, 15 bloggers and skit markers were also found demeaning women and girls on their social media handles, a trend that must be brought to an end she emphasized.
In her presentation, Mrs. Funmi Falobi noted that it is imperative to know that hatred against women is both on and offline.
According to findings from her Focus Group Discussion; parents must encourage gender equality between their children by ensuring the menace is uprooted from the homes.
She further stated that the campaign must be sustained by media, authorities, religious groups and individuals in a bid to bring to an end stereotyping and hatred against women.
Furthermore, Falobi stated that above all, women must learn to stand for each other in the quest to end misogyny because silence amounts to support and a nod for the continuation of the practice.
The survey was carried out by Journalists For Christ (JFC) International Outreach with the support of World Association For Christian Communication (WACC) and Bread For The World – German Protestant Agency for Diaconia and Development.
