The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of two teenagers who drowned in an open pond while trying to escape from suspected phone snatchers in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
In a statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the incident occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, at about 4:04 p.m. along Ring Road Kureken Sani in .
According to the statement, the Fire Service Control Room received a distress call from one Muhd Abba reporting that two youths had fallen into an open water body in the area.
Rescue operatives from the agency’s headquarters were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, they discovered that two 18-year-olds, Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, had fallen into the pond.
The victims were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu of Unguwa Uku Quarters.
Preliminary findings indicated that the tragedy occurred when the victims were attempting to flee from suspected phone snatchers pursuing them. In the process of trying to escape, they reportedly fell into the pond.
In a separate incident on Monday, March 9, 2026, the Fire Service also rescued a 40-year-old man who fell into a well at Durumin Zungura by Assahabul Khahafi in .
The victim, identified as Shitu Balarabe, was successfully retrieved alive by the rescue team and later handed over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe, a resident of Durumin Zungura in Kano city.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, the Fire Service urged members of the public to take precautionary measures by keeping children away from open water and ensuring that wells are properly secured with protective walls and metal covers to prevent accidents.
