The Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) has described the three years of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as transformative year.
The Agency said it is a three years of unprecedented achievements in drug availability, debt clearance and healthcare infrastructure.
Speaking ahead of the celebration, the Director General of the agency, Pharm. Gali Sule, said the event is designed to showcase the governor’s commitment to rebuilding the state’s healthcare system and fulfilling the mandate for which the agency was established.
According to him, one of the administration’s greatest achievements is the dramatic improvement in the availability of essential medicines across public health facilities in Kano State.
He revealed that when Governor Yusuf assumed office, drug availability stood at barely 30 percent, leaving hospitals and primary healthcare centres struggling with shortages. Today, he said, availability has risen to over 90 percent, describing the feat as one of the most significant healthcare successes recorded in the state.
Pharm. Sule also disclosed that the agency inherited liabilities of about ₦1.2 billion owed to pharmaceutical suppliers, a burden that threatened the smooth supply of medicines. He said the Governor’s administration cleared the entire debt by January 2026, restoring confidence among suppliers and ensuring uninterrupted access to quality medical commodities.
He noted that the exceptional achievement has attracted national recognition, revealing that pharmaceutical stakeholders will honour Governor Yusuf with an Award of Excellence during the anniversary celebration in appreciation of his commitment to settling long-standing debts that many governments often neglect.
The Director General said the anniversary activities commenced on Monday, July 13, 2026, with a special Qur’anic recitation and prayers for Nigeria, Kano State, Governor Yusuf, the Ministry of Health and all leaders, seeking divine guidance and continued peace for the state and the nation.
He added that the programme will continue on Wednesday with a public lecture focusing on the growing menace of drug abuse in Kano State. The lecture will feature experts from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, as well as Islamic scholars who will discuss the medical, social and religious dimensions of substance abuse.
As part of the grand finale, Governor Yusuf is expected to commission the agency’s newly completed Pharma-Grade Warehouse, the first facility of its kind in Kano State. Pharm. Sule explained that before now, public healthcare commodities destined for Kano had to pass through Sokoto because of the absence of such a warehouse in the state.
He said the commissioning of the modern warehouse will mark a new era in healthcare logistics, allowing essential medicines and medical commodities to be transported directly from Lagos and Abuja to Kano, thereby reducing delays, improving storage standards and strengthening the state’s healthcare supply chain.
Pharm. Sule added that the celebration will also provide an opportunity to showcase the agency’s documented achievements over the past three years, many of which have already been presented before the National Council on Health and applauded as a model of effective healthcare reform.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining the gains recorded under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration in the years ahead.
