What’s Democracy?

This writing will try to analyze what is political Democracy and how the system operates in all parts of the world. USA is the mother of Democracy and India is the largest Democracy having more than 700M voters compared to Nigeria with about 96M voters and America with about 200M voters and has been in practice of the system since 247 years ago. Furthermore, Nigeria is the largest Democracy in Africa.

The Democratic system was initiated in Athens (Greece) 508BC and since then the system has been in practice in the world.

Democratic system is the most resourceful system in the world today for the fact that the system has been in practice in all the continents of the world. Nigeria has not been left behind for the past 24 years of Democratic Governance. The President of the United States of America Joe Biden commended President Muhammad Buhari this week in all African Leaders’ meeting in Washington (about 49 African Leaders were in attendance) for his positive stand to practice Democracy in “Nigeria and other African Nations”.

Although it will take more years for Nigeria and other African Nations to perfectly fine tune how the system is working effectively, especially the 57 key principles and elements of the system.

Anyway, Democratic system is a fantastic system that gives emphasis on equality and justice for the citizens and again, each and every citizen has the right to vote and be voted into any position he/she wishes to represent his/her people in the corridor of power in the National, State or at Local Level.

In the coming new year of 2023 Nigerians will elect new leaders from the post of President, Senators and House of Representative Members on 25/02/2023.

And exactly two weeks after getting the results, Nigerians will again elect State Governors and State Assembly Members that will run the affairs of the country at Federal Level and States.

Some of the key elements of the game

Citizen, free, fair, credible Election, Internal Democracy, Constitution, Presidency, Judiciary, Legislative Arms of Government and Media as well as Political Parties are the most fundamental elements of Democratic system. Other are: human rights, equality and justice, economy, associations, effective leadership, civil service and so on.

Citizen

This means that citizen will be represented in the corridor of power (Democracy is a game of representations or call Representatives Democracy) and formulate policies that will improve the nation’s economy, education for the citizen and the family as well as health care and more. Also, the State and National Assemblies at all times can formulate laws for the peaceful coexistence of the citizens especially; law and order, security and economic activities in the country. Hence, Political Democracy means “Governance”.

Professor of Political Science at the School of Politics and International Relations, Kent University, UK (basis) Albena Azmanova observed that “Political Democracy is a game between vision and practicality” 2010. This means that the leaders will come up with vision or strategic planning on how to put their vision into practicality. The system is in dare needs of visionary leadership that will bring positive development to the governed.

Election

The current President of Nigeria Muhammad Buhari assured the world that he will conduct free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria’s Democracy in 2023.

Election is the backbone of Democracy; according to Professor Attahiru M Jega (BUK) “election is the building block of Democracy” 2007. Also, according to Professor Paul Collier of Oxford University, London, opines that “election is an institutional technology of democracy” 2009, UK.

This means that election is the heart beat of democratic system anywhere in the world. Without free, fair, credible and internationally acceptable elections the system has been described as “Democrazy” by both Professors, Paul Collier and Tatah Mentan – Wars, Guns and Votes Democracy in Dangerous Places, London, 2009 and Held Together by Pins: Liberal Democracy under Siege in Africa, 2007, Eritrea.

Internal Democracy

Internal Democracy is an important element in Democratic system anywhere in the world. Internal Democracy can by voting or consensus. The election of Dr. Nasuru Yusuf Gawuna and Murtala Sule Garo is an excellent example in Nigeria’s Democratic system.

Dr. Nasuru Yusuf Gawuna is the only candidate that has vast experience with three Governors:
1. Malam Ibrahim Shekarau
2. Engr. Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso
3. Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (OFR).
