The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has dismissed reports suggesting that it plans to deploy armed personnel to monitor the 2027 general elections, describing such claims as inaccurate.

The Commission clarified that it has neither announced nor contemplated the deployment of armed personnel for election monitoring, insisting that reports linking it to such a plan do not reflect its official position.

According to its spokesperson, J. Okor Odey, the ICPC stressed that the Commission is currently not armed and has not equipped any of its personnel with firearms.

“For the avoidance of doubts, please the ICPC has not stated that it is deploying armed personnel to monitor elections. As at today, the ICPC is not armed and has not armed any of its personnel,” the statement said.

The spokesperson suggested that the remarks attributed to the Commission’s representative may have been misunderstood or quoted out of context, leading to the impression that the anti-corruption agency intended to introduce armed personnel into the electoral monitoring process.

The ICPC further emphasised that it has not, either directly or indirectly, declared any intention to use armed personnel in monitoring the 2027 elections, urging the public to disregard any interpretation suggesting otherwise.
