The Kano State Government has approved a major reform in its healthcare system with the launch of the Kano State Supply Chain Quarterly Review Meeting, a new platform aimed at improving coordination, accountability and the uninterrupted supply of medicines and essential health commodities across public health facilities.
The initiative was approved by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, during the second-quarter review meeting organised by the Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) in Kano. He described the reform as part of the government’s commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare delivery system through a more efficient and resilient supply chain.
The Commissioner praised the leadership of the DMCSA for institutionalizing the review mechanism, saying the expanded platform would enable all health supply chain programmes and stakeholders to jointly assess performance, identify operational gaps and develop practical solutions for improved service delivery.
Earlier, the Director-General of DMCSA, Pharm. Gali Sule, sought the Commissioner’s approval to broaden the quarterly review meeting beyond the Agency, citing the significant progress recorded since the initiative was introduced. According to him, the expanded forum will encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing and coordinated decision-making among stakeholders across the health sector.
Pharm. Sule also announced a week-long programme to commemorate the third anniversary of the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, beginning on July 13. Activities include special prayers, a media campaign highlighting the Agency’s reforms, a symposium on drug abuse featuring experts from the NDLEA, psychiatry and Islamic scholarship, as well as an appreciation dinner.
The celebration will climax on July 16 with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Pharma-Grade Warehouse by Governor Yusuf and the recognition of the Governor by the Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) for settling inherited pharmaceutical debts estimated at ₦1.2 billion. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, is expected to attend the event.
