The Coalition of Northern CSOs under the auspices of Conference of Northern States Civil Society Networks has condemned the recent banning of all NGOs in Zamfara State.

This decision according to the group, contravene the fundamental rights of Nigerians guaranteed in chapter 4 of the 1999 constitution as amended which provided the rights of association.

The conference from the 19 Northern states which converged in Kano on Thursday, maintained that they are concerned on the increasingly continuous attempt by some governments at both national and states to shrink the civic space in Nigeria.

Addressing news men shortly after their conference, Amb. Ibrahim A Waiya, president, Kano CSO Forum, stated that the coalition demands an immediate lift of the band by the Zamfara state government and allow NGOs resume their activities in the state.

He, however added that the Conference of Northern CSOs is not in support of any group that hides under the umbrella of NGO to commit any crime anywhere in Nigeria.

That rather than place a general band. The government of Zamfara state should use appropriate measures in screening out those violating the rules of the state and Nigeria at large.

Waiya maintained that should Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara and his government refused to heed their call, the Northern CSOs will explore other available means of correcting and reversing the decision.
