The Nigeria Customs Service Seme Area Command is witnessing a significant transformation under the leadership of Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, as the strategic border corridor continues to emerge as both a secure frontier and a thriving hub for legitimate regional trade.
Since assuming office, Comptroller Kaila has combined operational discipline with strategic administrative reforms, repositioning the Seme Border as a critical gateway for commerce and security along the Lagos–Abidjan Corridor. Under his watch, the Command recorded ₦15.6 billion in revenue in 2025, representing a remarkable 117 percent increase compared to the 2024 figure.
The revenue performance reflects the growing economic importance of the corridor, especially as the Nigeria Customs Service continues to strengthen trade facilitation and anti-smuggling operations nationwide. The Command also recorded its highest monthly revenue in December 2025, generating ₦3.63 billion.
Kaila’s leadership has been anchored on two major priorities — border security and seamless trade facilitation. Drawing from years of operational experience in anti-smuggling activities, the Customs boss has intensified surveillance and enforcement measures aimed at dismantling illicit trade networks operating across the border corridor.
At the same time, the Comptroller has sustained engagements with traders, transport unions, business operators, and host communities to build trust and improve compliance. The approach aligns with the One-Stop Shop system introduced to simplify customs procedures, reduce delays, and facilitate the smooth movement of legitimate goods along the Lagos–Abidjan trade route.
The Seme Border remains Nigeria’s busiest land corridor and a major gateway to the wider West African sub-region, particularly the Benin Republic. Stakeholders believe the ongoing reforms and operational strategies introduced by the Command are gradually transforming the corridor into a model for secure and efficient regional trade.
Beyond revenue generation and enforcement, the Command has also intensified community-focused interventions, including empowerment initiatives and medical outreach programmes aimed at strengthening relations with border communities and promoting socio-economic development.
Known among colleagues as an “uncommon jungle officer,” Kaila’s operational style is described as deliberate, stealthy, and unpredictable — a strategy that has reportedly unsettled smuggling syndicates operating through illegal border routes. His administration has also emphasized policy clarity, stakeholder inclusion, and alignment with the federal government’s broader objectives on border security and economic growth.
Observers say the sustained reforms under Comptroller Kaila could further elevate the Seme Border from a traditionally contested frontier into one of West Africa’s most secure and commercially viable trade corridors, while safeguarding government revenue and promoting lawful commerce across the region.
