The Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General WB Idris, has assured Nigerians that troops remain relentless in the fight against terrorism despite operational challenges posed by the rainy season.
He disclosed on Thursday to Defence Correspondents in Gusau, Zamfara State that between January and April, troops recorded an average weekly recovery of five weapons and the neutralisation of at least 10 terrorists during sustained military operations across the theatre.
Major General Idris explained that sustained military pressure has forced terrorists to abandon major highways and conventional routes, which are now firmly dominated by security forces.
According to him, the criminals have changed tactics by retreating into remote hinterlands where they attack isolated communities and vulnerable farmers in an attempt to create the impression that security forces are absent.
The Theatre Commander noted that the rainy season presents significant mobility challenges for troops because military vehicles, including five-ton, seven-ton and ten-ton platforms, cannot easily navigate soft and waterlogged terrain.
He added that although air operations remain critical, adverse weather conditions also affect the deployment of aircraft and drones during missions.
Despite these limitations, he stressed that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to pursuing terrorists wherever they hide. He said troops are increasingly relying on intelligence, drones and air power to detect, track and eliminate terrorist elements operating in remote locations.
Speaking on troop welfare, Maj. Gen. Idris said personnel of Operation FANSAN YAMMA are adequately equipped, well-fed and motivated for operations. He explained that troops receive their Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) promptly, are provided with three meals daily, sufficient drinking water and Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs) whenever they embark on operations.
He further commended the continuous support from the Army Headquarters, Defence Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force Headquarters and Nigerian Navy Headquarters, noting that the joint efforts of the armed forces have strengthened ongoing counter-terrorism operations across the theatre.
The Theatre Commander urged the public to understand the realities of the current operational environment, emphasizing that attacks reported in remote farming communities are often carried out by terrorists hiding deep in the hinterlands after being denied access to major roads.
He assured Nigerians that troops will sustain aggressive operations until all terrorist enclaves are dismantled and lasting peace is restored.
